Collection: What is a Pueblo Storyteller?

One of the most interesting and unique clay art forms to ever come from Native American hands is the Pueblo "Storyteller."
For centuries the importance of passing on traditional beliefs and customs was held in high esteem by native cultures. Yet, it was not until 1964 that Helen Cordero of Cochiti pueblo created her first pottery storyteller. She got the idea after watching her grandfather periodically beat a drum, chant songs, and pass down intriguing stories and important native traditions to her children.
Close to 250 pueblo potters are presently making their own style of storytellers. From human to animal forms, storytellers come in all sizes and shapes, contributing to their ever increasing appeal.
