Skookum dolls were a popular tourist item or souvenir in the early 20th century.
Skookum dolls were first made by Mary McAboy in Missoula, Montana in 1910. The name comes from a Chinook expression meaning "very good" or "excellent". Skookum dolls were styled to depict Native American people and the various tribes.
They were made for tourist sale from 1913 up till the late 1950's.
This doll purchased from a private collection is believed to be circa 1940 from the face and the moccasin style. Skookum dolls had no arms or hands. They are wrapped in a blanket and appear to be holding the blanket tightly from inside.
This is an Apache boy from the hairstyle and trousers.
